:: The Philips Oops Monday, December 18, 2000 |

Mistakes at work can be quite costly. I used to work at Philips Semiconductors, a plant where microchips are constructed. The smallest, tiniest silicon chips go onto wafers by the hundred, then get all sorts of furnace and wet recipes to become the sort of chips that might go into a mobile phone or computer. Every wafer is worth more than it's weight in pure gold, I'm told. And when wafers are put into cartridges that hold 25, and these need to go into a machine that can hold four cartridges.. Well, when you then mistakenly enter the wrong recipe on the machine (routine sucks), and destroy just one batch like that.. You get fired instantly. I noticed that today. Fair enough. I felt terrible leaving the plant for that reason, but had to agree. The thing is, I've been getting bored with my work there, it's been the same each day, every day. I can't deal with factory work, so my mind wondered, and oops. On the plus side.. I had opted to work over the Christmas holidays but I now get to spend them with friends and loved ones! And oh.. My mind wondered especially about the possibility of studying in Edinburgh perhaps. Now, I might look for a job there already? Hmm..
